RESEARCH.ThispastyeartheFoundationhascontinued

toactivelyreviewthecurrentresearchgrantssponsoredby
theCanineHealthFoundation,thatmighthavesignificance
tothebreed.Severalgrantswerethoughttohaverelevance
toPBGVsandweresponsored.Thesubjectsofthesestudies
areasfollows:

•APilotStudy:EstablishingtheRoleofMelatoninintheOccurrenceofSeizuresinDogs
•IncreasingAwarenessofTick-BorneDiseaseinDogsSufferingfromImmune-Mediated

HemolyticAnemia,Thrombocytopeniaand/orJointPainthroughAccurateDiagnosis
ofInfection.

•PreventingInaccurateDiagnosisofBrucellosis.
•DocumentationofDisease-CausingTicksinaFieldTrialEnvironmentforthePurpose

ofDevelopingPracticalandCost-EffectiveStrategiesofTickControl.

•ANovel,PracticalandCost-EffectiveTreatmentforCanineArthritis.
InadditiontheRabiesChallengeFundwassupported,

withtwoseparatedonations,andFoundationsponsored
Dr.Komaromy’sattendanceatthe2014NationalSpecialty
forasecondyearinarow.Wehavebeenveryfortunateto
havehadthatkindofcontinuityforthepasttwoyears.

EDUCATION.OneofthegoalsthatFoundationis

chargedwithistoprovidehealtheducationtothemembers.
Whocouldenvisionthatoneofthemosteffectivewaysof
doingthatwouldbethroughtheuseofsocialmedia,
namelyFacebook.OursiteisadministratedbyLauraLiscum,
whopostsvaluableinformationaboutresearchasitis
published,healthinformationandalsonewsaboutrescue.
OurFBpagegetsquiteabitofactivityfromaveryvaried
audienceandlotsofcomplimentaryfeedback.

Overthepastyear,Orangemanhasmadeseveralcameo

appearancesandhasdevelopedquiteaFacebookfollowing.

RESCUE.Whiletheresearchandeducationalgoalsofour

missionareincrediblyimportant,nothingtouchesusmore
thantherescueobligationsofPBGVCAandFoundation.
TheRescueCommitteeispartofPBGVCAanddoesallthe
difficultworkindealingwithrescuesituations.Foundation
assiststhecommitteebypayingtheapprovedexpensesfor

therescue.Weareproudtosaythatsofarwehavebeenable
tofundtheseexpenseswithoutexception.

FUNDRAISING.Thisistheprimarymeansbywhich

Foundationisabletosupportresearch,educationandrescue
efforts.WeareveryfortunatethatPBGVownersarededicated
totheirhoundsanddonatetoFoundationtohonorthem.

MembersoftheFundraisingCommitteearecommitted

toexploringavarietyofalternativewaysmemberscan
contribute.Ourmembersareincrediblyloyaltothebreed
andverygenerous,andforthatweareeternallygrateful.

Thechallengeisalwaystothinkcreativelytodevelop

opportunitiesformemberstobeabletodonateinwaysthat
donotinvolveout-of-pocketmoney.Theseopportunities
includedesignatingFoundationinbequests,annuitiesand
matcheddonationprograms.Wearealwaysopentoall
typesofsuggestionsformakingdonationspossible.

Inthispastyear,wehavereceivedtwovehicledonations

frommembersthroughtheDonationLine,avehicle
donationprogramthatallowsnon-profitstheopportunity
tobenefitfromthedonationofalmostanytypeofvehicle,
runningornot.PleaselookforouradfortheDonationLine
inthisissueforinformationaboutthisservice.

Perhapsthemostimportanteventoftheyearwasthe

announcementbyTheAnimalHealthTrustintheU.K.that
thegeneresponsibleforPrimaryOpenAngleGlaucoma
(POAG)hasbeenidentified.Thisdiscoverywillallowfor
thedevelopmentofamarkertestsothatPBGVscanbe
screenedtodeterminetheirstatus(clear,carrier,affected)
inrelationshiptothisdisease.Justimaginehowmuchpain
andsufferingwillbesparedfordogsandowners.

ThemembersoftheFoundationBoardarecommittedto

themissionofFoundationandarelookingforwardtothe
challengesof2015.WewishallPBGVsandtheirpeoplea
healthy,safeandpeacefulyear.
