T
he schedule for the 2014 National Specialty is loaded,
starting with a tour of the Skycastle French Hounds on
Saturday, May 3, continuing with two days of hunt tests,
then agility and other events from Tuesday, May 6, through
Saturday the 10th.
When I'm traveling to a PBGVCA event, if possible I try
to see some non-canine attractions of the area the show is
in. I've seen the Houston and St. Louis zoos, museums and
botanical gardens in St. Louis, Charlotte and Phoenix, and
other area attractions.
The area near Camp Hill, Pa., site of our next national
and regional specialties, offers things that are truly special.
The club will be offering a dog-sitting service
in the grooming room, so you can feel free to
leave the Radisson Hotel and go exploring.
This past November was the 150th
anniversary of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
The Gettysburg National Military Park is only
about 30 miles from Camp Hill. Gettysburg
was the bloodiest battle of the Civil War, with
some 51,000 casualties. There is a museum
and visitor's center on the grounds, and there
is a self-guided automobile tour which you
can take with your human (and even) canine
companions. There are many picturesque
areas where one
can drive, sit and
contemplate the events
that occurred there 150
years ago.
Adjacent to the
battlefield is the
Eisenhower National
Historic Site, where
President Eisenhower
had a farm that served
as a weekend retreat
and a meeting place for
world leaders. Purchase
tickets and take a shuttle
bus from the Battlefield Visitor Center.
Continuing on the Civil War theme, the National
Civil War Museum is located in Harrisburg, just across the
Susquehanna River from Camp Hill. The museum has many
thousands of artifacts, focusing not only on famous persons
of the war but on the average soldier fighting for both the
North and the South.
To the east of Harrisburg is the town of Hershey. Guess
what happens there? Not only can you visit Hershey
Chocolate World and stock up on sweet treats (remember
the show theme is "Sweet Dreams"), but there is a big
amusement park (see the photo below!) and
other attractions.
To the southeast of Camp Hill you can find a
real change of pace in Lancaster County, home
of America's largest Amish settlement. You can
tour the rolling countryside in your car or an
Amish horse and buggy. You can shop for
handmade Amish crafts and experience
genuine Pennsylvania Dutch cooking.
So plan to take advantage of being in
south-central Pennsylvania, get away from
the show site for a little while, and enjoy the
special attractions of the area.
