RESEARCH.ThispastyeartheFoundationhascontin-
uedtoactivelyreviewthecurrentresearchgrantssponsored
bytheCanineHealthFoundationthatmighthavesignifi-
cancetothebreed.
SeveralgrantswerethoughttohaverelevancetoPBGVs
andweresponsored.Thesubjectsofthesestudiesare:
•EarlyDiagnosisofCushing’sDisease
•TheRabiesChallengeFund
•IdentificationofNovelDrugstoHalttheMetastasisof
TumorsthatCauseCushing’sSyndrome
•DefiningtheGeneticBasisofInflammatoryBowelDis-
ease
•UnderstandingtheFlexibilityandLimitationsofHow
DogsAcquireKnowledgeandUnderstanding.
ThelastthreestudiesaredetailedbyLauraLiscuminan
articleinthisissue.
TheFoundationsponsoredDr.Komaromy’sattendanceat
the2013NationalSpecialtytolectureandperformeye
exams.Thedogsalsohadblooddrawnwithsamplessentto
Dr.Komaromy’slab(primaryopenangleglaucomastudy)
andtoCHICforDNAbanking.
EDUCATION.OneofthegoalsthattheFoundationis
chargedwithistoprovidehealtheducationtothemembers.
Whocouldenvisionthatoneofthemosteffectivewaysof
doingthatwouldbethroughtheuseofsocialmedia,
namelyFacebook.OursiteisadministratedbyLauraLiscum
whopostsvaluableinformationouttothemembersabout
researchasitispublished,healthinformationandalsonews
aboutrescue.OurFBpagegetsquiteabitofactivityfroma
veryvariedaudienceandlotsofcomplimentaryfeedback.
Overthepastyear,Orangemanhasmadeseveralcameo
appearancesandhasdevelopedquiteafollowingonFace-
book.
RESCUE.Whiletheresearchandeducationgoalsofour
missionareincrediblyimportant,nothingtouchesusmore
thantherescueobligationsofPBGVCAandFoundation.
TheRescueCommitteeispartofPBGVCAanddoesallthe
difficultworkindealingwithrescuesituations.Foundation
assiststhecommitteebypayingtheapprovedexpensesfor
therescue.Weareproudtosaythatsofarwehavebeenable
tofundtheseexpenseswithoutexception.
Rescuereceivedquiteaboostthisyearwhenat-shirt
campaignwasinitiatedbyaPBGVownerandtheproceeds
wereearmarkedforRescue.Wearecontinuouslyamazedby
thecare,concernandgenerosityofthefaithful.
FUNDRAISING.Fundraisingistheprimarymeansby
whichtheFoundationisabletosupportresearch,education
andrescueefforts.WeareveryfortunatethatPBGVowners
arededicatedtotheirhoundsanddonatetotheFoundation
tohonorthem.
MembersoftheFundraisingCommitteearecommittedto
exploringavarietyofalternativewaysthatmemberscan
contribute.Mostofusarestillfeelingtheeconomicsqueeze
fromastalledeconomyandthehighunemploymentrates
acrossthecountry.Ourmembersareincrediblyloyaltothe
breedandasgenerousastheycanbe,andforthatweare
eternallygrateful.
Thechallengeisalwaystothinkcreativelytodevelopop-
portunitiesformemberstobeabletodonateinwaysthatdo
notinvolveout-of-pocketmoney.Theseopportunitiesin-
cludedesignatingtheFoundationinbequests,annuitiesand
matcheddonationprograms.Wearealwaysopentoall
typesofsuggestionsformakingdonationspossible.
Inthepastfewmonths,wehavecompletedalltheneces-
sarypaperworktojointheDonationLine,avehicledona-
tionprogramthatallowsnon-profitstheopportunityto
benefitfromthedonationofalmostanytypeofvehicle,
runningornot.PleaselookforouradfortheDonationLine
inthisissueforinformationaboutthisservice.
PleasevisittheFoundationStorethroughalinkonthe
PBGVCAwebsitetoseewhathasbeenaddedrecently.
ThemembersoftheFoundationboardarecommittedto
themissionoftheFoundationandarelookingforwardto
