Chairman’sReport.AlanKaltersummarizedthepast

20yearsofsignificantprejudice,negativeattitudesand
onerouscaninelegislationgeneratedbyARpeopleand
groups.TheAKCisembarkingonmajorprojectstoconfront
theseattacksbyemphasizingthepositivesofpurebreddogs
andresponsibledogownershipwhileattackingthemyths.
AKCstaffledbyChrisWalker,BobAmenfromtheboard
andAlanKalterworkingwithEdelmanPR,outreachpartner,
areworkingwithproactivelychallengingtheprejudiceand
changingtheconversation.Wearebeingaskedtopartici-
patebysendingtheAKCthetoughestquestionsbeingasked
ofpurebreddogpeople.Theanswerswillbecompiledbythe
AKCandsentasatoolkitforuseinourcommunities.The
AKCwantsourstory:howwepickedourbreed,whywe
breedandthehealthofourbreedhaschangedasaresultof

President’sReport.DennisSprungthankedclubsfor

ourcontinuingsupportoftheHumaneFundwhichhas
ncreasedfundingby50percentsincelastDecember,
providingmoreassistancetoparentclubrescueworkand
increasinggrantstowomen’ssheltersby93percent.The
SandyFundispoisedtoprovidereliefintheeventoffuture
naturaldisasters.TheMichaelSuaveMemorialBenefit,the
TheaterandDinnerbenefitpriortoWestminsterand
BonhamsAuctionHouseofferingBarkfestatBonhams
allgive100percentofproceedstotheHumaneFund.The
Eukanuba/AKCshowwillhave25camerasandmorethan
300hourslivestreamingofall-breedjudging,BIS,aswell
asobedienceandagility.TheAKCwillpresenttwocompli-
mentarysessionsoftheAKCBreeder-2-Breederseminar.

(Aug.)2013.Revenueisup+$2mil,andexpensesaredown,
-$2.2mil,withnetoperatingshowing+$4.2milover2012.
Investmentsareupwithanunrealizedgrowthof+$6.5mil
thisyearoverlastyear.Registrationsarebetterthanexpected
(i.e.,didn’tfallasmuchasprojected).Incomeassociated
withregistrationsare+$1.1milabove2012.CARincomeis
up$400,000YTDover2012.

Amendments.Anamendmentwasofferedthatpre-

miumlistsaresentoutatleastfiveweekspriortoclosingof
eventsandeliminatesthedifferenttimeframesforsending
outthepremiumlists.Thisamendmentwasadopted.An
amendmentwasreadthatwouldcreateaBred-By-Exhibitor

owners,hasover5millionpetsenrolledwithrevenueup
morethan10percentfrom2012.Anewname,logo,tagline
andwebsitehavebeendevelopedtoelicitabetterandmore
appealingpublicresponse.ThenewnameisReunite,the
logohasalinedrawingofadogwalkingtotheviewerwith
ataglineof“Thewayhomeforlostpets.”Theyhavethe

PetDisasterTrailerProgram.PatLaurensdiscussed

theneedfordisasterreliefforpetsexperiencedoverthepast
severalyears.AlthoughorderedtoleaveNewOrleansafter
Katrina,44percentofthepeoplewouldn’tgobecausethey
wouldn’tleavetheirpets.Subsequently,thefederalgovern-
mentpassedlegislationmandatingthatlocalemergency
managementineverystatehaveboththeresponsibilityfor
andaplaninplacetocareforitscitizens,includingplansto
careforpeoplewithpets.FEMA.govhasaStateDirectoryof
EmergencyManagersforeverystate.AKCPetDisasterRelief
Trailersarenowbeingmanufacturedandstockedwithall
mannerofessentials,including:•Administrativesupplies:
logbooks,volunteerregistrationforms,wrist/collarbands,
check-inmaterials.•Maintenanceequipment:batteries,
gascan,ducttape.•Animalcare:cratespackedonrolling
dollies,carcarriers,litter,microchips,andscanner,bowls,
collarsandleashes.•Equipment:fans,generator,lighting
hose.•Cleaningsupplies:mop,trashcan,tarps,litter
boxes,disinfectants.•Accesstotrainingmaterials:turnkey
implementationofCo-LocatedSheltersandPop-Up
Reunion.•Centers,volunteermobilization,decontamination
andreplenishment.•Trainingmaterials.

LastsummerAKCCARvotedtosupporttheDisaster

TrailerProgrambygiving$250,000overtwoyears.Each
trailerisa16ft.x7-ft.two-axleunitwithmanyofthe
materialsnecessarytosetupasanemergencyshelterfor
50ormorepetsandserviceanimals.Eachfullystockedand
deliveredtrailercosts$22,000.

Only501(c)(3)tax-exemptorganizationsforanimal-

relateddisasterreliefactivitiesinaccordancewiththeFederal
PETSActof2006areeligibletoapplyforaPetDisasterRelief
Trailer.Theseagenciesmustagreetostore,maintainand
insurethetrailer,showcaseitintheircommunityevents
anduseitincaseofadeclaredemergency.Kennelclubscan
raise/donatemoneyforthetrailersandberecognizedby
havingtheirclub’slogoononeofthetrailers:$1,000
forone10-in.logo,$2,500fortwo12-in.logos,$5,000
fortwo18-in.logosand$10,000fortwo24-in.logos.
Acomprehensivepacketofmaterialswasgiventoeach
delegatetosharewithhis/herclub.
