little hound.  Quite a few PBGVs still have the natural hunting instinct.  You may have seen it in your own back yard.  Sev-

eral PBGVs at the 2016 National Hunt passed the Hunting Instinct Test the first day and went on to pass the regular hunt

test the next day and had never hunted before in their life.  The hunt grounds are securely fenced so no need to worry,

you will be able to catch your PBGVs even if they aren’t quite ready to stop at the end of the test.

T

he time has come to get busy and start working with your PBGVs.  You can attend a local obedience class or in this

day and age of the internet you can even find YouTube videos of how to perform each sign in Rally or how to per-

form all of the exercises in Beginner Novice Obedience.  Most hounds like shorter training sessions more often rather

than one long training session.  When you keep them short they are easy to work into your everyday life.  Make them sit

stay while you are watching TV, even just for a minute or two.  Make them sit or down before they get their food or can

go outside when you open the door to your fenced yard.  As you walk down the hallway in your house have them heel

at your side while you talk to them and stop once or twice and make them sit.  A good way to learn the automatic sit.

Walking close to the wall helps them learn to heel close to your side.

have several PBGVs and they each come into the kitchen and back room individually for short training sessions when

I’m trying to get them ready for a competition.  After a few sessions they all get very excited when they know it is train-

ing time.  They wait for their turn as they watch the other dogs getting all the attention and treats.
