Winter 2016  Saber Tails 39

Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen Club of America

This is the trial where being able to “read your

dog” becomes of the utmost importance, since

the handler has to end the search when they

think that their dog has found all of the hides

and within a given time frame.

K9

Nose Work is a sport that any PBGV would

love, because at the heart of the game is

a desire to hunt Birch, Anise or Clove “bunnies.”

We have seen many dogs of all breeds excel at

this sport, including older dogs and timid dogs.

This sport builds up a dog’s self-confidence and

keeps their minds sharp.  And it allows you, the

handler, to improve on your partnership with

your canine companion and gain a better un-

derstanding of how they experience the world

around them.

Editor’s Note:  To find out more about activities you can do with your dog, such as Nose Work, contact your local obedience

clubs, dog training clubs or AKC kennel club associations.  A simple Google search for “dog obedience training,” “dog training

club,” etc., will help you find local resources in your area that can open up a whole new world of activities to keep your scent

hound entertained and channel that extra energy into a fun and good activity instead of the mischief we know they can find

on their own.  Many of these activities also offer AKC titling so you can add some titles to their end  of your dog’s name.
